Sports massage focuses on preventing injuries, enhancing performance, and promoting recovery for athletes and active individuals. Each session starts with a posture analysis and an understanding of the activities you are involved in and any tension or injurys with the body. A sports massage is a lot more targeted than a deep tissue massage, however I do offer a full body MOT sports massage which is 60/90mins long. Our treatments differ from other types of massage by incorporating techniques like dry cupping, assisted stretching, specifically targeted at improving athletic performance. Please let me know if you have a sporting event coming up as I will reduce the pressure to avoid post massage soreness.

As I use massage wax during the session, the sports massage is performed in bottom underwear with appropriate towelling for your privacy throughout the session, however, I encourage you to wear what you feel comfortable in. If you prefer to wear clothing, it’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting shorts and top that allow a full range of motion. Avoid wearing anything too restrictive or with too many layers, and anything that you would be upset if you got oil on. Often I involve assisted stretching as part of the end of a sports massage and you can either get dressed to perform this part of the session or I will ensure appropriate towelling throughout the stretching. Loose-fitting clothing can be provided on request. I do not carry this with me and must be requested a minimum of 24hrs before your session.

Sports massage helps prevent injuries by improving flexibility, increasing circulation, and reducing muscle tension. It aids in recovery by accelerating the healing process, reducing inflammation, and relieving pain from overuse or strain. Regular sessions can keep your muscles in optimal condition and reduce the risk of future injuries.
-
The frequency of sports massage depends on your activity level and specific needs. Athletes in intense training may benefit from weekly sessions, while others might find bi-weekly or monthly massages sufficient for maintenance and injury prevention. I will recommend a schedule that best supports your goals.
-
While some discomfort may be experienced, especially in tight or sore areas, most clients find the treatments enjoyable. Techniques like dry cupping may cause temporary redness or mild soreness, but we adjust the intensity based on your comfort level throughout the session. Dry cupping is only included into the session if you are comfortable with this. These marks can last up to a week, but normally fade after 24hours.
-
Absolutely! Sports massage is beneficial for anyone who leads an active lifestyle or experiences muscle tension, stiffness, or stress. It can help with posture correction, chronic pain management, and overall physical wellness, making it suitable for both athletes and non-athletes alike.
-
Regular sports massage can enhance flexibility, reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and speed up recovery after exercise. It also helps prevent injuries by maintaining muscle health, improving joint mobility, and reducing the risk of muscle imbalances. Additionally, it reduces stress and promotes relaxation.
-
After your session, it’s important to stay hydrated and avoid intense physical activity for at least 24 hours. Light stretching and warm baths, sauna can help ease any post-massage soreness. If you experience any unusual discomfort, be sure to contact me for advice.
-
Sessions typically last between 50 to 80 minutes, depending on your needs and the areas being treated. Shorter sessions might focus on specific problem areas, while longer sessions allow for a more comprehensive treatment. I can also tailor longer sessions to your requirements.
-
Dry cupping involves placing suction cups on the skin to create a vacuum that increases blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and promotes healing. It’s highly beneficial for speeding up recovery, reducing inflammation, and relieving deep muscle tightness.
-
Common side effects include mild bruising, redness, or soreness, especially after IASTM and dry cupping. These effects are normal and typically subside within a few days. To be on the safe side with cupping, if you have a wedding or event within 2 weeks, please do let me know, and we will avoid cupping for the session.

My deep tissue massage is more rhythmed massage than sports massage. Unlike a typical spa massage the pressure is still deep and targeted to the individuals requirements. This massage is performed with relaxing music and less conversational. For me it is important you are able to fully relax during these sessions, which is why we call this massage the reset. Pressure is always adjusted to the clients needs, and can be eased off. I will still focus on what your body needs this is not a soft-touch spa massage. I can perform and am qualified in relaxing/swedish massage if you wish, just let me know, its your session.

Assisted stretch therapy involves stretches that target specific muscle groups. The therapist uses their expertise to guide your body through a range of motions, ensuring a deeper and more effective stretch than you could achieve on your own. This therapy is designed to improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall mobility. Often I also gently massage the muscle tissue during the stretch. I will often incorporate assisted stretching into my sports massage sessions.
-
Assisted stretch therapy can improve flexibility, increase range of motion, reduce muscle stiffness, and alleviate chronic pain. It’s also beneficial for improving posture, enhancing athletic performance, and speeding up recovery after exercise or injury. Regular sessions can contribute to better overall physical well-being and reduced stress.
-
Assisted stretch therapy is beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels. It is very popular with Pilates clients and dancers. Sports such as Running, Golf and Padel also find it incredibly useful to increase hip movement and range of motion. It’s especially helpful for athletes looking to enhance performance, individuals recovering from injuries, those with chronic pain or stiffness, and anyone looking to improve flexibility and mobility. Even if you’re not active, assisted stretching can help reduce the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
-
During a session, you’ll lie on a comfortable table while the therapist moves your body through various stretches. The therapist will communicate with you to ensure each stretch is within your comfort level and beneficial to your goals. Sessions typically last 40 minutes and are customised to your specific needs. Assisted stretching is also incorporated into sports massages.
-
The frequency of sessions depends on your goals and current physical condition. For those looking to improve flexibility or recover from an injury, weekly sessions are often recommended. For general maintenance or relaxation, bi-weekly or monthly sessions might be sufficient. I will help create a schedule that’s right for you.
-
Assisted stretch therapy is generally gentle and should not cause pain. You might feel some light discomfort, especially if your muscles are tight or you’re not used to stretching, but it should never be painful. Its actually very relaxing. I will work within your comfort range and can adjust the intensity of the stretches based on your feedback. The sessions do require ongoing feedback between us.
-
Assisted stretch therapy allows for deeper and more effective stretching than self-stretching. I will guide your body into optimal positions and apply controlled pressure to enhance the stretch, targeting muscles and areas you may not be able to stretch effectively on your own. It also reduces the risk of injury from improper stretching techniques.
-
Most people experience positive effects such as increased flexibility and reduced muscle tension. However, you may feel mild soreness or fatigue after your first few sessions, especially if your muscles are tight. These effects are normal and usually subside within a day or two. Staying hydrated and lightly stretching on your own can help ease any discomfort.
-
It’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for a full range of motion, such as workout clothes or yoga attire. Avoid wearing anything too restrictive or with too many layers, as it could impede the stretching process. If assisted stretching is performed at the end of sports massage therapy, I will either provide adequate towelling throughout the stretching session, or you can get changed into your gym/yoga attire.
-
While assisted stretch therapy is safe for most people, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions such as acute injuries, severe osteoporosis, or specific joint or muscle issues. It’s important to discuss your health history with your therapist before starting therapy to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for you. Prior to your first appointment, I will ask you to complete a consultation form.
“I booked an appointment with Mio as I had been feeling very twisted and tight in my lower back, and IT band area and was suffering from a shoulder injury and golfer’s elbow. I’m a 63 year old woman who is generally fit, but lately I have been struggling and feeling my age. Mio took all this on board and was very attentive and took the time to listen to the issues I was experiencing and how they were impacting my day to day activities. He spent the time working through deep tissue massage in all the area I highlighted and at the end of my session I couldn’t believe how well I felt. I was standing straight and I was achy and pain free. It was just incredible and now I’m feeling so much better and more positive in myself to get back into my fitness routine. I can’t recommend Mio enough.”

What my clients say
“I booked Mio for a pre triathlon massage and I can’t recommend his sports massage enough! I felt really relaxed and more flexible before the event, my joints felt great! I went into race day feeling far more confident. Even post the event, my joints feel loose, no aches and pains! I genuinely think it helped me move more freely and prepare both physically and mentally. If you’re training for an event, recovering from exercise, or just feeling tight and achy, I’d highly recommend booking Mio in - he made me feel really comfortable and gave me some great advice too!!”
- Hannah K, triathlete, Cheshire UK
“I can't recommend Mio enough! I went in feeling really stiff and with aching shoulders and a stiff neck. Mio listened to what I told him and tailored the treatment accordingly. He took the time to understand where I was holding tension and adjusted the pressure and techniques. I left feeling lighter, looser, and genuinely relaxed for the first time in ages! I would highly recommend and will definitely be using Mio again!”
